She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Charles “Chuck” Engel; half-sister, Sharon Drill; brothers, Harvey, Wally, Denny Drill; half-brothers, Darwin Drill and Roger Drill; and step-brother, Ronald Lane.

Joyce A. Drill was born July 7, 1929 in New Ulm to George and Anna (Palmquist) Drill. She attended grade school at St. Paul’s Lutheran School. On June 24, 1950, Joyce was united in marriage with Kenneth “Sonny” Engel in the St. Paul’s Parsonage in New Ulm. The couple was blessed with three children whom together they raised in Lafayette Township. After marriage, Joyce predominately worked from home raising their family, but later in life worked at Lyle’s Café. Joyce had a variety of passions and hobbies in her life that brought her great joy. She truly loved nature. She enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, bird watching, and even raised white tail deer. To relax, she found pleasure in taking in a good book, doing jigsaw puzzles, or socializing with friends or neighbors over a good game of Sheepshead. From her youth on, Joyce had a talent for singing. She was always quite fond of her time singing with her local group, Sadie and the Trail Riders. In her past for excitement, she enjoyed going for a ride on her Indian Motorcycle and was even one of the original members of the Flying Dutchmen. Always known for her talents in the kitchen, Joyce will forever be remembered for her lemon meringue pies, egg coffee, delicious home-made soups, and her wonderful buns. She was a devout member of the United Church of Christ where she volunteered many hours with the Ladies Aid, and also served as a Sunday school teacher. Although Joyce had such a wide variety of hobbies that brought her joy, nothing brought her greater joy than her family. She dearly loved each and every one of them, and especially loved getting to spend time with her great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed be her memory.

Memorials are preferred to the Brown County Humane Society or the donor’s choice.
