Dr. George O’Neill DVM

WINTHROP – Dr. George Duane O’Neill DVM, 76, of Winthrop, died Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Winthrop.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m, on Friday, January 23, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Paul Tessmer officiating. Burial will follow in the Winthrop Cemetery with full military honors being provided by the Winthrop Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday and again from 10-11a.m. Friday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop.

George is survived by his wife, Kathleen O’Neill of Winthrop; daughters, Susan O’Neill of Winthrop, Rebekah (Tom) Reynolds of Marshall; sons, Daniel (Cheryl) O’Neill of Bloomington, Matthew (Cindy) O’Neill of Mankato; grandchildren, Alexandra Hood, Andrew Hood, Sonia Reynolds, Riley O’Neill, Max Reynolds, Chloe O’Neill, Conner O’Neill; twin sister, Georgia O’Neill of Norton, Kansas; and brother, Dr. Tim (Kim) O’Neill of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

George Duane O’Neill was born November 9, 1938 in Phillips County, Kansas to Charles Wayne and Helen (Foskett) O’Neill. He attended college at Kansas State University where he attained a degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. George served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-1963. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Walz on February 11, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop. They were blessed with four children. George worked for Dr. John Eckstein in Sleepy Eye from 1967 until 1975 when he established his own practice in Winthrop where he specialized in Dairy Herd Health. George was an active member of each community he lived in. While in Sleepy Eye, he was a member of the St. John’s Church and School Board of Education, Sleepy Eye Saddle Club, and MVMA. Later in life when he established his practice in Winthrop he was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Winthrop Honor Guard, Winthrop Health Board, Community Ed, Winthrop Opportunities, and the Winthrop Game Protective League. He also demonstrated his pride in his family and community through his involvement in the school. George was a member of the Winthrop School Board, GFW School Board, and also displayed his talents, constructing sets for the GFW Theater Department. He was also a devout member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. George will be remembered by many for his community involvement and his dedication to the clients he served. His family will remember him for his caring compassionate heart. He was always there for them in any time of need, and his memory will live in their hearts forever.
