Melvin Garbers

SHERBURN – A Celebration of Life Service for Melvin Duane Garbers, 74, of Sherburn, Minnesota, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn, Minnesota with Rev. Steven D. Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont, Minnesota.

Melvin was called to his eternal rest on Saturday morning, March 29, 2014 at Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Family Funeral Home in Sherburn and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Melvin Duane Garbers was born May 19, 1939 to Walter and Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Diekmann) Garbers at home in Westford Township rural Truman, Minnesota. He was baptized at home in rural Truman on May 24, 1946 and confirmed on April 11, 1954, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sherburn, Minnesota. Melvin started school at District 74 in rural Truman and moved in 1950 to District 86 rural Sherburn. Due to consolidation, he entered Sherburn Public School in 1952 and graduated from Sherburn High School in 1957. After graduation Melvin stayed at home and farmed with his Dad milking cows, farrowing pigs and crop farming. Melvin also worked for Curtis Olson and Albert Peterson on their farms. Melvin took over the family farm in 1975 until 2009 when he retired. After retirement he helped Clifford Anderson with farming always looking forward to planting season and harvest. When Melvin was younger he enjoyed going to dances at Fox Lake Ballroom at Sherburn and Interlaken Ballroom at Fairmont. He enjoyed the family birthday parties and in later years enjoyed an occasional trip to a casino. His biggest and favorite hobby was feeding Holstein steers. He was a Martin County West sports fan – watching his nieces play volleyball and basketball and later a niece and nephew coach basketball. He also watched great-nephews play football and baseball and a great-niece play volleyball. He enjoyed watching the RFD channel on Saturday nights. Melvin was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church in Sherburn where he served as Vice-president and President of the Congregation and various other boards. He courageously fought cancer over the years since 2002. He entered the Trimont Health Care Center on March 10, 2014.

Melvin is survived by one brother, Marvin (Roberta) Garbers of Sherburn, MN and one sister, Delores (JeRay) Armstrong of Hanska, MN; three nieces, Brenda (David) Lovhaug of Brooklyn Park, MN, Deanna Garbers of Sherburn, MN and Marla (Clifford) Anderson of Sherburn, MN; five great-nephews and great-nieces, Daniel, Paul and Bethany Lovhaug of Brooklyn Park, MN, Zachary and Emily Anderson of Sherburn, MN, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Minnie Garbers; grandparents; one great-niece, Laura Lovhaug; aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
