The body of a coal miner has been found in a flooded West Virginia mine, the governor says
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Patrick Morrisey says crews have found the body of a coal miner missing for days after a mine flooded in West Virginia. Morrisey says foreman Steve Lipscomb was found early Thursday after the water receded enough for rescue crews to enter Alpha Metallurgical Resources’ Rolling Thunder mine near Belva. He had been missing since Saturday, when a mine crew hit a pocket of water. Crews hoping for a rescue had machines pumping out water at a rate fast enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in under two hours. The death is the third at an Alpha facility in West Virginia this year.
DOJ sues to block California US House map in clash that could tip control of Congress
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Justice Department has sued to block new congressional district boundaries approved by California voters, joining a legal battle that could determine which party wins control of the U.S. House in 2026. The complaint filed in California federal court Thursday targets the new congressional map pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to a similar Republican-led effort in Texas backed by President Donald Trump. It sets the stage for a high-stakes clash between the Republican administration and the Democratic governor, who’s seen as a likely 2028 presidential contender. California voters last week overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to change the congressional boundaries to give Democrats a shot at gaining five seats.
Ammonia gas leak from a tanker truck in Okla. sickens dozens and forces evacuations
WEATHERFORD, Okla. (AP) — Authorities in Oklahoma say a leaking tanker truck spewed a hazardous gas in a hotel parking lot overnight, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate and hospitalizing several dozen people. The anhydrous ammonia leak happened late Wednesday in Weatherford. City officials said Thursday that at least four people were in critical condition. Schools closed, and several nursing homes evacuated. A shelter-in-place order was lifted Thursday morning. The city’s police chief said the leak happened after the truck driver had parked behind a Holiday Inn Express for the night. Officials said the leak might be due to a mechanical failure. Cleanup efforts could take several days.
Judge denies NJ Rep. McIver’s request to dismiss Trump administration charges
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A federal judge has denied Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver’s motions to toss out a federal prosecution against her stemming from a visit to an immigration detention center this year. U.S. District Judge Jamel Semper also said Thursday he would reserve judgment on one of the New Jersey congresswoman’s motions to toss the case brought by acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, who was President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney. McIver sought to dismiss the case against her on the grounds that her visit to Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center in May was protected on the grounds of constitutional legislative immunity as well as selective and vindictive prosecution.
