FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota prosecutors charged a Minnesota man on Monday with manslaughter in the death of a Twin Cities woman after human remains were found west of Fargo.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office cautioned in a news release Monday that it wasn’t immediately certain whether the remains found Friday are those of Michelle Newell, 45, of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, who was last seen alive in late August in Cass County. But it said the suspect, Timothy Barr, 51, of Lakeville, Minnesota, provided information that led deputies to the remains, which were sent to a medical examiner for identification.

A Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Sgt. John Eastham, said he did not know what motivated Barr to divulge the information and turn himself into Minnesota authorities Friday.

Prosecutors have alleged that Barr indicated to informants that he argued with Newell over methamphetamine and accidentally ran her over before disposing of her body.

Barr was originally charged in Minnesota with second-degree murder and criminal vehicular homicide, but Ramsey County prosecutors dropped the charges last month, saying they lacked jurisdiction because they had no body and no evidence the alleged crime was committed in Minnesota.

The new charges also include one count of failing to stop in an accident involving death or injury.

Barr was in the Ramsey County Jail in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Monday, awaiting an extradition hearing.

His attorney, Connie Iversen, did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the new charges.
