NICOLLET — Dave Holcomb, representing the American Legion and the Nicollet Chamber of Commerce attended explained the upcoming summer events at Monday’s Nicollet City Council meeting.
Friendship Days will be Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, with activities planned for Sunday, June 22. The parade will be on Saturday this year with a new parade route to be announced later. A deputy will be on the corner of 4th and Ash Street to allow access to Schmidt’s Meat Market during the parade. Sunday’s activities will be an omelet breakfast from 8-11 a.m. with adult bingo starting at noon until about 3 p.m.
“I’m here as a formality for permission to do what we do,” said Holcomb. He requested reserving the park for Friday, Saturday, and possibly Sunday. He also requested Pine Street to be closed from 4th to 5th Street for Friendship Days.
Ribs R’ Rockin’ is planned for Saturday, July 26. The Chamber is hoping to have twenty plus food vendor participants this year. Last year there were nineteen participants. This event will also be held in the park and will require Pine Street closed from 4th to 5th Street.
Nicollet’s Night Out is Tuesday, Aug. 5. It will be held in the park and starts at 5 p.m. The same closure of Pine Street will be required for this event.
The council approved the plans for all three events.
Maintenance
The bid for street repairs from MR Paving and Excavating for $12,456.00 was approved by the council. The areas that need to be fixed before crack sealing are the alley behind the City Shop where the pavement is higher than the concrete apron in one section, curb and street settling on Heideman Avenue, blacktop settling on Hillside Court, and adjusting the manhole in 9th Street by Dollar General.
Two bids for dust control on the 200 block of Elm Street were reviewed. SW Dust Treatment’s bid was for $1,041.39, and the bid from AmLawn was for $969.00. The council approved the bid from AmLawn and advised Clerk Vanessa Drill to contact the Nicollet Farmers Exchange about their participation in this cost as this gravel road is next to their property.
“After the honeysuckle plants were removed near the Mara Tonka apartments, there needs to be some dirt work and probably hydroseeding to restore the grass in the area,” said Council Member Phil Radel. “We don’t want to wait until the next meeting to approve to have this work done,” said Council Member Kevin Ostermann. A motion was made and approved to get two bids and if they come in under $2,500 to proceed with the work so the grass can begin to grow.
The council will take a City Tour on May 19 to look for any other maintenance issues.

The Right-of-Way Agreement and resolution closing a segment of 9th Street, was approved contingent on Hewitt Manufacturing signing the agreement.
