Weaving Our Stories Together premiers on Nov. 12

NEW ULM — Weaving Our Stories Together, a play created by the United We Stand Players of New Ulm and Open Arts Minnesota, will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 and 7 p.m. at the New Ulm Community Center, 600 N. German St.

ASL will be available at the 2 p.m. show. Free will donations will be accepted at the door.

Weaving Our Stories Together is a show that features personal stories from the actors in the group as well as stories from actors who have passed away.

Weaving Our Stories Together was created in 2020-2021 during the global pandemic. Each actor wrote a short, personal story about themselves that they wished to share with others. The group also decided that they wanted to include stories from actors who had passed away but left us with their stories from a past production called, Quilt Stories. The group rehearsed on Zoom for about 18 months until they could gather in-person again in late 2021.

Weaving Our Stories Together shares the vision of the group about the importance of storytelling. The group believes that every person has a story to tell and when the stories are woven together with others, we create a beautiful tapestry of humanity. During the show, audience members will be given a ribbon that they can bring forward to create a weaving with the ribbons of the actors. Each show will end with a unique tapestry weaving of community.

The play is a collaboration between Open Arts Minnesota, the United We Stand Players of New Ulm and People First of New Ulm. The United We Stand Players have created original plays and performances around issues of disability justice and inclusion for 28 years. Weaving Our Stories Together is made possible in part by a grant from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council with funds appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature from its general fund.
