Sleepy eye rider climbing hills with best of them

NEW ULM — Motorcycle hillclimb competitors from near and far conquered — or attempted to conquer — the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club Hillclimb Sunday.

Entrants included Jason Braun, 44, of Sleepy Eye, who won the two-stroke event and placed high in the 600 and master’s (over age 40) event.

The hill, with two jumps, is more than 200 feet long from base to summit. Larger motorcycles climb the hill in several seconds. Most competitors climbed the hill without falling. A few lost traction and spun out.

Braun climbed the hill on a two-stroke motorcycle in just a few seconds. He recently won the masters division at a national hillclimb event in Michigan and said his finish qualified him to compete professionally.

Jason doesn’t plan to turn professional.

“It’s too expensive,” he said.

He talked about the national hillclimb in Michigan that included more than 400 competitors and about 30 masters division riders.

“That hill was super steep, more than 350 feet long,” said Braun. “It rained all day the day before.”

Why does he do it?

“It’s about adrenalin, racing up the hill,” Braun said. “Hillclimbing can be tricky, trying to find the right track and gear selection.”

Jason’s son, Kaden, 14, also competed in Sunday’s competition.

A four-time national hillclimb champion, Jason Braun raced in motorcycle motocross races and the snowmobile hillclimb at Golden Gate Campground north of Sleepy Eye in his younger days.

“I’m too old for that now. It’s a younger guy’s sport,” he added. “I’ve got to go to work on Monday morning.”

He’s suffered broken legs twice and a broken collar bone in motorcycle hillclimb events.

Braun delivers bulk fuel and oil at Braun Oil in Sleepy Eye. Jason said he enjoys deer hunting with family members.

Hillclimb results will be published after they are received.

The Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club hosts flat track races beginning at noon, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18-19.
