Gag House exhibits U.S.-Dakota War panorama

To commemorate the 160th anniversary of the U.S.-Dakota War, the Wanda Gag House will open a new exhibit Aug. 13 featuring 10 images on canvas attributed to artists Anton Gag, Christian Heller, and Alexander Schwendinger, from a panorama of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War.

The panorama, completed in 1893, was painted on one piece of cotton muslin measuring almost 7 feet high by 110 feet long.

Telling the story of the U.S.-Dakota War through scenes of its major events, the panorama’s panels follow the dates of the conflict from August through December of 1862.

Images include Attack on the Lower Sioux Agency, Attack on Fort Ridgely, Attack on New Ulm, Evacuation of New Ulm, Attack on the Sacred Heart Settlement, Attack at Birch Coulee, Battle of Acton, Camp Release, Return to New Ulm, Mankato Execution and a map of Southern Minnesota indicating where the events occurred.

The panorama was shown at the artists’ studios in April and a county fair in September of 1893. It then disappeared until 1955, when it was discovered in a barn in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The original panorama is now housed in the archives at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul.

Before being archived, digital pictures of the panorama were taken, and these prints were used to create the images on canvas on display at the Wanda Gag House.

The Panorama Images of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War exhibit opens Saturday, Aug. 13 and closes Sunday, Oct. 2.

The Wanda Gag House is open Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m.-2 p.m. now through Oct. 2, and weekdays by appointment.
