Two deaths Sunday on Minnesota River in Renville County investigated

RENVILLE COUNTY — The Renville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the deaths of two people in two separate incidents that occurred on the Minnesota River on Sunday, June 19.

At 2:58 p.m. Sunday, the office received a 911 call from an individual who reported finding a body caught in a river logjam between Franklin and Morton. Renville and Redwood County sheriff’s offices responded with the Department of Natural Resources.

The body of a man was recovered from the river and transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for identification and investigation of the cause and manner of death.

At 5:23 p.m. Sunday, the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a person reporting drowning in the Minnesota River several miles upstream, near Vicksburg County Park, south of Renville.

Several agencies responded. Emergency responders learned a young male was recreating with family and swimming in the river without a life jacket and began to struggle in the water.

Emergency responders launched several boats and searched for the male.

At about 7:40 p.m., a young adult male was pulled from the water. The victim was transported to the hospital in Redwood Falls, where he was later pronounced dead.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending identification confirmation and family notification.

Assisting agencies included sheriff’s offices form Renville, Redwood and Lyon counties, Minnesota State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Renville, Granite Falls, Belview and Redwood Falls fire departments, Redwood Falls and Granite Falls ambulance and North Air Care.

Both incidents are under investigation by the Renville County Sheriff’s Office.
