Disability advocate to speak Wednesday

NEW ULM — Sue Hankner, Minnesota coordinator for A-Team Minnesota, will speak in New Ulm about workplace and residential flexibility for individuals with disabilities, on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., at the New Ulm Community Center, Room 112, 600 N. German St.

A-Team Minnesota, a chapter within A-Team USA Grassroots, promotes and advocates for a full array of choices in services for people with disabilities.

“We are all about choice: my life, my work, my home,” explains Hankner.

Recently passed legislation, including the Minnesota HF 33-HHS Omnibus Bill, will require employers to pay workers with disabilities minimum wage beginning in 2025. This could result in the closing of center- based work places, reduction of peer interaction, and loss of wages.

Hankner has been an advocate for two severely disabled sons for four decades. She serves on the Minnesota families and Advocates Coalition Steering Committee and on the Board of A-Team Minnesota.

Parents or relatives of young or adult children with disabilities, professionals with disabled clients, self-advocates and other interested persons are all invited to hear Sue and to discuss local action to protect choices.

The public is welcome. Masks are required.
