NEW ULM — After months of construction, the new fitness center at the New Ulm Park and Recreation Center has reopened to the public.

The new fitness center opened at 5 a.m. Monday morning, and most of the regular users were there. Assistant Park and Recreation Director Cheryl Kormann said a lot of people were excited to be back and were pleased with the new space, commenting that it was brighter, more open and more welcoming.

Kormann said all the regular users were back for the first day, as well as some newcomers. The morning fitness classes were also well attended.

As this is the first week back, it is unknown at what times the new fitness center will be busiest. Previously, morning and after work in the late afternoon were the popular times to work out. That could change with the new expansion.

The fitness center saw an expansion with the upgrades. Around 90% of the equipment is new.

Construction still continues at the recreation center. The indoor playground, gymnastic center and aquatic center are not done yet. The target date for completion for the entire recreation center is September.
