Sanborn man faces two felonies, six charges

Woman says she moved to safe house

NEW ULM — A 44-year-old rural Sanborn man is facing six charges, including two felony counts, in Brown County District Court for allegedly abusing minors.

Wayne A. Turbes, 14634 450th Avenue, Sanborn, was charged March 4 with felony 3rd-degree assault-past pattern of child abuse, felony threats of violence, gross misdemeanor malicious punishment of a child, two counts of misdemeanor domestic assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Turbes’ bail was set at $30,000 without conditions, $2,500 with conditions on March 4. An initial appearance was set for 8:30 a.m., March 16. He bailed out of jail Thursday without conditions.

According to court documents, a Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy took a phone call Feb. 27 from a woman regarding domestic assault to her child and harassment she said she received from Turbes on Feb. 26. The woman said she moved to a safe house with her children and said Turbes called her “nonstop” and drove around looking for her.

The woman said she has audio recordings of Turbes being verbally and physically abusive to children in their home at a different rural Sanborn address. The woman said she and Turbes have three children together and she has two older children from a previous relationship.

In the audio recordings, Turbes was heard screaming at the children, calling them derogatory names, and breaking items, according to the complaint.

One of the older children told Reed that in 2016, Turbes threw the woman to the ground and he faced a domestic charge after the incident.

The woman told Reed most of the abuse in the home since they returned after leaving in 2016 is emotional and verbal abuse. In addition, she said since the COVID-19 pandemic began, she and her children are “pretty much prisoners in their own home because they are not allowed to leave.”
