SLEEPY EYE — The 39th Annual Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club Fishing Derby will take place with COVID-19 restrictions on Sunday, Feb. 7.

The fishing contest will be held from noon to 3 p.m. and is limited to the first 250 individuals. Entry fee is $5 per person and includes door prize eligibility. Registration takes place on the lake and at a number of local businesses.

Non-registered fishermen can participate in raffles and fish on their own on the entire lake.

First-prize is a 2020 Ice Castle Stinger fish House. Raffle tickets are available at businesses in Sleepy Eye, Fairfax, New Ulm, Morgan and Franklin.

COVID-19 restrictions including required face masks and social distancing are expected to be followed by any and all people on the lake. Restrictions will be enforced by fishing contest workers. Masks will be available free to all attendees.

Fishermen are allowed to enter at both ends of the lake.

Households will be transported on outdoor trailers to the registration area, then to fishing areas to reduce walking and congregating. If more than one household is being transported, they must allow six feet of social distancing.

Fishing contest registration, fish weigh station and raffle purchasing will be in designated, separate areas on the lake to reduce congregating.

Individuals waiting to be registered will have positions to stand, marked by cones while waiting.

No more than 15 individuals or members of three households are allowed at one time in any of the designated areas.

Registered fishermen must place fish houses at least 35 feet apart.

Game fish categories are northerns, bass and walleyes. Pan fish are sunfish, perch and crappies.

Raffle winners will be posted virtually on the Sleepy Eye Sportsman’s Club Facebook page to avoid drawing site congregating.

Raffle winners need not be present to win. Winners will be notified.

Fishing derby proceeds go to local parks and lake projects and other organizations for projects. The sportsman’s club donates to many local organizations, schools and clubs. They have done many projects themselves and with other organizations.
