CAMBRIA — A rural New Ulm woman is breathing easier today after her son was delivered late Thursday afternoon on their rural Cambria farm.

Katie Yarger, a Citizens Bank Minnesota Connections Representative, was working from home Thursday when she began having contractions at about 4:45 p.m.

“My husband (Leon) was on his way home from daycare with our 22-month-old when the contractions came really fast. It was very painful,” Yarger said.

“About halfway down our driveway, which is about a half-mile long, he called 911 because we didn’t think we could make it to the hospital,” she said. “The Courtland Fire Department showed up. We went to our in-law’s (Roger and Caryl Yarger’s) house since it was closer to where we where on the driveway and they had less steps. The baby was delivered in my in-law’s living room at 5:55 p.m.”

Beau Spencer Yarger weighed seven pounds, one ounce and was 20 inches long. He was born at little early, at 36 weeks.

“My husband was there the whole time. He did a great job,” Katie Yarger said. “I was in a lot of pain. I had no medication until I was in Mankato at the (Mayo Clinic Health System) hospital. The baby and I are both doing well.”

She was especially thankful to Courtland firefighters.

“I am incredibly thankful to the Courtland Fire Department and Lake Crystal Ambulance for helping us out,” she said. “Courtland Fire Department First Responder Tim Portner held my hand and talked me through everything. He was absolutely amazing. I think a Lake Crystal EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) delivered the baby.”
