NEW ULM — Friends, family and local police celebrated Lucas Kjelshus’s birthday Monday.

A special birthday parade drove past his home on the KC Road, led by New Ulm Police Department SUVs.

Kjelshus turns 31 on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, and with the recent dial back on COVID restriction, he will be unable to celebrate his birthday as intended. To make up for the loss of a traditional birthday, a special event was organized for him. Kjelshus had previously participated in police ride-a-longs. The participation of the NUPD was appreciated.

Kjelshus was surprised and overjoyed by the birthday parade. The parade caught him off guard. On seeing the police vehicle flash their lights he gave a loud cheer.

“I am like a kid in a candy store,” Kjelshus said. “I did not expect this.”

After the parade, Kjelshus’s immediate family was able to join him for the birthday cake.
