Schools adopt mask policy

NEW ULM — The New Ulm District 88 School Board approved a COVID-19 face-covering policy before the start of the new school year.

The purpose of this policy is to establish requirements for employees, students and other visitors on school property to wear face coverings in classrooms, preschool, child care settings and other indoor areas, and in outdoor areas where a physical distance of 6 feet cannot be maintained between persons, to minimize exposure to COVID.

The policy is intended to comply with Gov. Tom Walz’ executive order and the requirements from the Minnesota Depart of Health and the Minnesota Department of Education. Unless an exception applies, all students, staff, and visitors present indoors are required to wear a face covering.

Superintendent Jeff Bertrang said the building leadership teams and principals are continuing to make adjustments to the fall learning plan. The first week of school will be dedicated to health and safety. Bertrang said there were more unknowns at the start of this year than in past years and adjustments will need to be made.

“Nobody can have 100% plan ready to go that won’t change in this environment,” he said.

The board approved a resolution relating to the election of school board members. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. It will be necessary to elect four school board members for terms of four years. This year all four incumbents, Mathew Ringhofer, Christie Dewanz, Jonathan Schiro and Dennis Waloch have filed to appear on the ballot.

The next school board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the District Boardroom and through teleconference or electronic means.
