NEW ULM — Early Childhood Family Education (EFCE) and Washington Learning Center (WLC) are on a kindness tour.

A bus full of WLC teachers is making the rounds visiting the homes of their preschool students to spread joy and encourage acts of kindness.

With social distancing measures in place, the teachers are greeting students from the front yard and engaging them in quick exercises, similar to what they did in class.

Preschool teacher Eileen Bierk led the kids in songs and yoga exercises.

Bierk said it was a chance to make a connection with the students and their families amid the shutdown of the schools. The kindness tour is a chance for the youngest students to see their teachers again.

This was also an opportunity for teachers to drop off new educational packets for the kids. The latest packet includes Earth Day-related activities.

“We want to encourage the importance of time spent more on creative play and family connection and less on electronic devices without supervision or content consideration,” Bierk said.

Bierk said the tour began Tuesday, visiting 13 students. On Wednesday, they visited more students including some in Hanska. The plan is to continue these visits for the rest of the school year.
