GFW board to discuss land sale, dance team cooperative sponsorship

FAIRFAX — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board will discuss a Gibbon land sale, dance team cooperative sponsorship with Sibley East and consider a superintendent search presentation on Monday, April 20.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be by telephone or other electronic means. Individuals wishing to make a public comment at the meeting shall email the comment to school board chairman Phil Klenk at phil.klenk@gfwschools.org by 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 20.

A recording of the meeting will be posted on the school district website

Discussion items include:

* A process following the May 1 offer deadline for selling land where the Gibbon football field is located. A land sale notice appeared in GFW newspapers and on GFW social media.

There has been interest shown in the land and multiple offers are anticipated.

It is recommended the board discuss paying spring coaches and advisors, which have not been cancelled at this point.

* Co-operative dance team sponsorship with Sibley East Schools. GFW Activities Director Rich Busse has talked about this with Sibley East officials.

Action items include:

* A South Central Service Cooperative presentation on a process and timeline for filling the open superintendent position.

* Budget reductions in line with the SOD (Statutory Operating Debt) plan submitted to the Minnesota Department of Education. Proposed 2020-2021 budget reductions totalled $464,000.94.

* A resolution for termination and non-renewal based on board discussions on budget reductions. There may be a need to non-renew staff.

GFW Junior and Senior High Principal Justin Johnston’s report reads that prom is currently postponed, depending on what Gov. Walz sets for policy about large gatherings.

Johnston’s report added that he is working on determining how to do graduation.

He will send a survey seeking distance learning feedback in the near future.

Elementary Principal Jennifer Thompson’s report reads that Kindergarten roundup was postponed but families have been called and 40 students are confirmed so far. A virtual meeting may be done later if the event is not rescheduled.

T-Bird Community Arts received a $7,000 grant from Prairie Lakes Regional Arts. The grant was for the GFW Summer Arts Camp and “The Sound of Music” production, both of which are on hold. The funds may be used next year including the summer of 2021. Spaghetti dinner and paint night events were cancelled.

Facility Manager Dave Sellner’s report reads that radon testing will be performed. High school auditorium hallway and lavatory wall cracks were repaired and repainted.

Grout lines are being painted in lavatories. Broken return air vents were replaced. Hallway ceiling repainting has begun.Plumbing was repaired in the Gibbon school second-floor lavatory.
