Dist. 84 board supports coach compensation plan

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye Public School Board directed Superintendent John Cselovszki Wednesday to create a MOU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with the teacher’s union to pay spring sports coaches a percentage of their salaries this school year.

Under the proposal, unanimously approved on a motion by board member Joleen Dittbenner, seconded by Jeremy Domeier, the school district will pay spring sports head coaches 65% of their stipend and assistant coaches 30% of their stipend this school year.

Cselovszki plans to bring back a signed MOU for board consideration at its May meeting.

Sleepy Eye High School Principal Shane Laffen’s report read that he is waiting for about a week to see how things progress, but decisions will be made on how to handle Gold Cord, prom and commencement this spring if students are not able to return to school this spring.

Laffen has received virtual commencement resources but would like to avoid it if possible. He will plans to correspond with senior households to assess what parents and students think.

MOUs giving business office and paraprofessional staff deemed essential, a $1/hour pay raise for working for the school district during a peacetime emergency were unanimously approved.

Cselovszki said 25 people have signed up for a essential employees daycare program and calls continue to come in asking about it.

“We average about 10 kids a day,” Cselovszki said. “Some people signed up only to use it a few days a week, every other week, or just here and there.”

His report added that five WiFi (Internet) hot spots have been purchased to provide service to students without internet availability.

“There were some attendance issues with our distance learning (online) program, but we’re doing fine now,” Cselovszki said.
