NUMC doctor called up for Reserve duty

Dr. Colvert

NEW ULM — Dr. Jared Colvert, a physician at New Ulm Medical Center, joined with the United States Army Reserves for a stateside deployment Friday.

Colvert is a member of the Army Reserves and serves a medical specialist. It is assumed he is being sent to a location hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak.

NUMC Clinic Manager Brie Taralson said they do not know where Colvert is being sent or even how long he will be deployed. Typically the deployment is for 90 days and usually he is warned months in advance. For this deployment Dr. Colvert was alerted earlier in the week.

This was an uncommon occurrence, but Taralson said there is nothing normal or common about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since there is no timeline on the deployment, there is some concern Culvert will need to postpone a sleep study fellowship he planned to undertake in July.

Before leaving, Colvert expressed regret for leaving NUMC before a potential surge in patients.

Taralson said NUMC is fortunate to have time to prepare for any potential surge. At this time the medical center has 40 physicians and 15 practitioners.

“We’re in a pretty good position for rural medicine,” Taralson said.

Dr. Colvert works in family medicine at NUMC. His special interests are preventive medicine, diabetes, hypertension, geriatrics, and osteopathic manipulation.

On his Allina Health provider page, Dr. Colvert said one of the most fulfilling aspects of his practice is watching patients meet their health goals.

Colvert and his wife Melissa have two boys named Harrison and Henry.
