Hillclimb drag races return today
At Golden Gate Campground Saturday after 5-year hiatus
GOLDEN GATE CAMPGROUND — After five years without the event, the River Valley Dutchmen Snowmobile Club Snowmobile Hillclimb is back at Golden Gate Campground on Saturday, Feb. 15.
“It’s been about five years since we had it,” said snowmobile club member Karen Stadick of New Ulm.
“It was cancelled a number of times because we battled the weather, often because of lack of snow. We’re hoping it works this year. The weather sounds favorable,” Stadick said.
The weather forecast for Saturday is party cloudy skies with a high of 31 degrees.
Aided by recent snowfall and grooming by the snowmobile club, the hill with jumps is in great shape, according to snowmobile club Facebook posts.
Registration is set for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Double elimination drag races begin at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
Food and beverages will be served at the campground chalet. Bonfires are available for added spectator comfort.
Trophy classes are trail stock, legends (40+), fossils (50+), Women’s, 4-stroke, and 440 and 600 stock.
Cash classes including race and trail sleds are stock and improved.
Tether switches are mandatory. All competitors must be age 18 or older. Pit fees apply.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for age 6-12. Children under age six are fee.
The campground is located 15 miles northwest of New Ulm or six miles north of Sleepy Eye in the Minnesota River Valley. Motorists can follow signs posted on highways.
Stadick said drag races can be followed on FM radio at 87.9 on the dial.
The River Valley Dutchmen Snowmobile Club does grooming and upkeep of 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Brown County. It works with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide safe, well maintained, enjoyable trails for snowmobilers to use.
