Sleepy Eye, Springfield schools open Monday

BROWN COUNTY — Sleepy Eye Public School and Springfield Public School and St. Raphael Schools begin classes Monday, Aug. 19, two weeks earlier than most area schools.

The schools are among a number of state schools that submitted applications detailing the merits and benefits of their plans to the Minnesota Department of Education.

Sleepy Eye Supt. John Cselovszki called the early start “a wonderful opportunity for our students to get an extra kick in their education.”

He said the district will move about 10 instruction days from the end of the school year to the start, giving students more time before state tests in April and May.

Besides the early start, the coalition of (early start) schools collaborate on staff development and achievement initiatives. Training for professional learning communities include teachers meeting to analyze student assessment data and curriculum.

Sleepy Eye and Springfield Public School enrollment was reported to be nearly the same this summer as it was last year at this time.

Sleepy Eye enrollment included 306 elementary students on Thursday and about 250 in the high school for a total of 556 students. Elementary enrollment could increase in the coming school days, since migrant student numbers are slowly coming in, according to school officials. Enrollment last year at this time was a 580 students.

Springfield Public School enrollment was 566 on Thursday. That compares to 570 students last year.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s enrollment was 142 elementary students and 119 high school students for a total of 261 students on Friday. That figure is a few students higher than last year.

Springfield St. Raphael’s enrollment is 81 students in pre-school through sixth grade, a few students less than last year.
