Girls dominate beef shows
NEW ULM — A pair of Springfield girls that said they enjoy competing and promoting cattle, Samantha Richert and Sydney Hauger, dominated the 4-H Beef Show at the Brown County Fair Thursday.
Competing at the Minnesota State Fair is something they’ve done a number of times.
Richert won Champion Market Beef title, showed the Reserve Champion Breeding Heifer and was Reserve Champion Senior Showperson.
“I like the competition. Cattle are my favorite animals. I like bringing them to shows and competing,” Richert said.
She admits her interests are demanding.
“It’s almost like a full-time job, working with animals daily,” Richert said.
Richert keeps busy in other ways to, playing basketball and softball in school.
She’s looking at studying agriculture communications at South Dakota State University.
“I want to promote the cattle industry,” Richert said.
Sydney Hauger showed “Flo,” a Black Angus that was named Champion Breeding Heifer. Hauger finished first in the state fair lineup.
“I love working with animals daily, walking, washing and brushing them,” Hauger said. “You learn patience because animals don’t always cooperate.”
Hauger said she keeps busy at school, competing in volleyball, basketball and track. She’s interested in studying nursing in college.
Carmen Lendt, 15, of Sleepy Eye, won the FFA Overall Best in Show award and showed the Junior Champion Heifer.
“I like showing cattle. It’s given me good opportunities,” Lendt said.
She’s active in volleyball and softball in school.
Isaac Lendt showed the FFA and 4-H Champion Cow Calf.
