Storms spawn tornadoes, drop hail in area on Thursday

BROWN COUNTY – Strong storms in the area created tornadoes, flooded streets, dropped hail and heavily damaged a turkey barn near St. James Thursday night.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported a tornado near Wabasso, plus several sightings of a twister that touched and ground and went back up into the clouds a number of times in southern Brown County.

A funnel cloud was reported in Belview at 5:05 p.m. and near Clements at 5:30 p.m. Golf ball size hail and winds up to 78 miles per hour were reported near St. James.

Street flooding was reported in Morgan and Redwood Falls, received 1.15 inches of rain. New Ulm reported a quarter inch of rain.

The Cottonwood River at New Ulm was observed at 9.43 feet at 11 a.m. Friday. Flood stage is 11 feet. The river crested at 9.58 feet earlier Friday, according to the NWS Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service.
