Dist. 84 board discusses, OKs future gym video boards

SLEEPY EYE — The District 84 Board of Education discussed adding LED video display screens in gymnasiums June 12.

Board member Joleen Dittbenner said two of the six feet tall, 10 feet wide Daktronics video displays that cost close up to $200,000. They would be would be placed in the high school gym and another in the elementary gym, possibly in time for the fall volleyball season. The video displays are more commonly seen in college and professional sports venues.

Dittbenner said 19 company sponsorships are sought to pay for most of the video screens. The board unanimously approved allocating $36,000 in fiscal year 2020 for the display screens on a motion by Brian Nelson, seconded by Casey Coulson.

“We’ve raised $60,000 in seven sponsorships and need to sell 12 more,” Dittbenner said. “I think they’d be such a great addition and we may engage more kids with them. I think it would enhance the student and fan experience.”

It was also mentioned that computer software updates would enable people to watch high school contests and events such as concerts, plays and graduation online.

Superintendent John Cselovszki said the district is looking at the FFA Farm to School Program that connects K-12 schools and local farms. Project objectives are serving healthy meals in school cafeterias, improving student nutrition, providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities and supporting local and regional farmers.

The board approved a 10-year, long-term maintenance plan, motion by Dittbenner, seconded by Jeremy Domeier. A parking lot repaving project scheduled for Fiscal Year 2020, roof repairs in 2021 and track repairs in 2023.
