Spengler, Peterson to speak on Memorial Day

NEW ULM — New Ulm High School graduate Peter Spengler and Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School grad Grace Peterson will speak at the Memorial Day Observance Monday, May 27, in New Ulm City Cemetery.

Spengler, the son of Kremena and Allen Triebenbach and the late Paul Spengler, will read the Gettysburg Address. He was the first New Ulm boy ever to be elected as a Minnesota Boys State Senator to the American Legion Boys Nation.

Spengler received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and U.S. Air Force Academy. He accepted the Air Force offer and plans to earn an aeronautics degree.

The daughter of Greg and Vickie Peterson of rural New Ulm, Grace Peterson attended the 2018 American Legion Girls State. She plans to study industrial engineering at Iowa State University.

A parade starts at 9 a.m. at 5th South and Minnesota Streets on Memorial Day. It will proceed north on Minnesota Street. In case of rain, services will be held at the New Ulm Community Center on North German Street at 10 a.m.

Post 132 New Ulm American Legion Post Commander and Persian Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm veteran Brian Krosch is master of ceremonies.

The New Ulm Municipal Band and the Concord Singers will provide music including military service songs.

The names of New Ulm area veterans who died over the past year will be read. A moment of silence will recognize all deceased veterans prior to Sam Arsers performing “Taps.”

The Avenue of Flags will be displayed Saturday through Monday in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Someone will be at the cemetery to assist with flags and staffs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, and Monday after the program until noon.

Area Memorial Day programs:

• Flag raising with the St. Mary’s School Band and Sleepy Eye Honor Guard at 9 a.m. in Sleepy Eye Veterans Park. Programs continue at St. Mary’s, Home and Leavenworth Cemeteries. Vietnam veteran pastor Bob Jueckstock of New Hope Church will give invocations. Memorial addresses will be given at Home Cemetery by Randy Reinarts and Beth Ann Zuhlsdorf.

• Master Sgt. Jeffrey R. Vogel of Springfield of the U.S. Army National Guard will speak at a program that begins at 5 p.m. in the Springfield High School Auditorium.

• Jeremy Reinarts will give the address in the program that starts at 10 a.m. in the Lafayette mini park downtown. The Lafayette Band will perform.

• Brad Pyan will give the address and Ruth Klossner will give a memorial reading at the program that starts at 11 a.m. in Nicollet City Park. Schell’s Hobo Band will provide music.

• A service starts at 9 a.m. in the GFW Elementary School gym in Gibbon. Children will be given American flags and are invited to participate in the annual Children’s March at the end of the service. The Winthrop Honor Guard will salute deceased veterans at Gibbon area cemeteries beginning at 7:40 a.m, then go to the school service.

• Vietnam veteran John R. Ingebritson will speak at the Fairfax Community Center program at 9 a.m. The GFW High School Band and Fairfax Color Guard will perform. Coffee and cookies follow the program.

• A program begins at 10:30 a.m. at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan. A potluck dinner begins at 11:30 a.m. at Mike Larsen’s place.

• Bob Tews will speak at the Franklin Community Center program that begins at 9:30 a.m. A gun salute and POW flag-raising ceremony follow at the Highway 19 flag display.

• Fr. Aaron Johanneck will speak in the program that begins at 10 a.m. in Gaylord City Park. The Sibley East High School Band will perform. The Gaylord Legion will hold ceremonies starting at 9 a.m. in church cemeteries.

• Pastor Bill Nelson will speak at the program that begins at 11 a.m. at High Island Cemetery in New Auburn. Music will be performed by Glencoe-Silver Lake High School students.
