New Ulm students attend FCCLA state conference

BLOOMINGTON — Students from New Ulm High School and Middle School attended the Minnesota Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state conference in Bloomington March 28-30.

The leadership conference included awards, leadership training and an opportunity to hear speakers. At the opening session, Minnesota’s First Lady Gwen Walz, a former high school state officer of the organization, brought a governor’s proclamation which declared March 28 Minnesota FCCLA Day.

Members attended workshops on leadership qualities, student body, Families Acting For Community Traffic Safety (FACTS), career connections, financial fitness, and community service.

The state officers, including Bethany Janssen from New Ulm High School, presented the state FCCLA theme, “Land of 10,000 Dreams.”

On Thursday, keynote speaker Morris Morrison spoke to attendees on diversity and challenged youth to dream, set personal values, goals and standards and make better choices. Other speakers were Jerrid Sebesta, who spoke about “Livin’ the Dream — Purpose and Financial Wellness,” Mike Donahue, who spoke about developing leadership values, and Craig Scott, who talked about being at Columbine High School when shootings occurred 20 years ago.

Nearly 1,000 students also participated in fifty Students Taking Action with Recognition, or STAR, events, with many receiving the option to qualify for the National FCCLA Conference at Anaheim, Calif., in July.

The following New Ulm FCCLA students received awards in events:

Nathaniel Janssen earned a gold medal in the Everyday Equations math test and in Recycle Redesign. He is the alternate to attend the national competition. Bethany Janssen received a bronze rating in Leadership. Noah Wolle received a bronze rating in Chapter in Review and the Everyday Equations math test. Lexi Schneider and Bradley Trullinger received a bronze rating in National Programs. Nate Allen received a silver rating in the Everyday Equations math test.

On Friday night, members were recognized for their efforts in the awards category. Nathaniel Janssen was among six in the state to receive the Ultimate Leader Award. Lexi Schneider received the Chapter Spark Award, and Noah Wolle the new member award. These students walked the “Walk of Stars.”

The mission of FCCLA is to promote personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.
