Author visits St. Paul’s for lesson on writing

Author Linda Jane Niedfeldt

NEW ULM — St. Paul’s Lutheran School’s fifth and sixth graders learned from an author on Thursday. Linda Jane Niedfeldt, the author of the Lisenka series, shared how she put stories learned from interviews with immigrants of long ago with some related historical facts to create historical fiction books for kids.

The books are “RED as in Russia and Measles and Love,” “GREEN as in Springtime, New Life, and God’s Will,” and now her newest “WHITE as Christmas Snow, a Candle’s Glow, and Heaven’s Robe.

RED begins in 1926, when ten-year-old German-Russian Lisenka, witnesses Russian soldiers destroying her Lutheran School. As persecution continues, Lisenka and her family are forced to flee their home for America

In GREEN, twelve-year-old Lisenka is a new immigrant in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where she struggles with the new language and customs and even with being bullied.

WHITE continues the story of Lisenka when she’s 14 and the Great Depression is beginning.
