Weather delaying MnDOT’s work on Hwy 14-15 project

NEW ULM — Weather has not been kind to the New Ulm Gateway project, but MnDOT has been adapting its construction plans so that completion is still scheduled for this fall with a new detour tentatively planned for mid-April, weather depending.

The recent wicked winter hindered work on the Minnesota River Bridge, but two piers on the west end were completed and some progress on the other two were made.

Construction on the new Highway 14/15 interchange bridge is actually ahead of schedule and crews will focus on the intersecting roadways as soon as a detour can be implemented. The goal is to be setting beams in mid-April. Progress on the bridge can be seen on the web cam at www.mndot.gov/newulm.

The new detour will consist of Nicollet County Road 5 (Fort Road) and Nicollet County Road 12 and Nicollet County Road 21 between Nicollet and Courtland due to the flooding on County Road 12 north of Highway 14.

“At this point, all plans are weather dependent,” Todd Kjolstad, construction supervisor, said. “We are closely watching flooding on Highway 14 near the new interchange as well as potential flooding on the detour routes.”

The Highway 14/15 New Ulm Gateway project addresses intersection safety, aging bridges, poor pavement conditions and occasional road flooding around New Ulm. Construction began in 2017, with the majority of the work and detours taking place in 2018 and 2019.
