Area bracing for wintry blast

NEW ULM — A major winter storm is expected to belt Minnesota with snow on Saturday and Sunday. With snow totals of 8 to 12 inches forecast across the from Saturday though Sunday, a number of local events have been canceled or postponed.

The forecast from the National Weather Service for the New Ulm area calls for freezing drizzle and sleet mixed with snow before 1 p.m., with snow falling mostly after 2 p.m. Snowfall could be heavy at times. The accumulation could be 3 to 7 inches during the day, with another inch or two by Sunday.

The following Saturday events have been cancelled or postponed:

The New Ulm Farm-City Hub Club’s Farm Show has been cancelled for Saturday.

The Lafayette Lions Club Bingoat Dave’s Place is canceled.

St. Raphel’s School in Springfield Cadillac Dinner scheduled for Saturday evening is postponed to Sunday, March 24.

A Memorial Service for Sandra Brandes Krienke has been postponed to April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Courtland.

On Sunday:

The Benefit for Brady Webster in Winthrop is rescheduled for Sunday, March 17 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at UFC-Berdan Center

St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette’s bingo event at 1 p.m. is canceled

Heartland Express will be closed on Sunday.

Catholic United Financial of Fairfax Sunday Brunch at St. Andrew’s is postponed to a later date.

The City of New Ulm has announced it will not call a downtown snow emergency Monday morning, due to a forecast of one to two inches of rain on Tuesday. The city street crews instead will be focusing on keeping catch basins open on the street.
