Another pedestrian hit in New Ulm

NEW ULM — A pedestrian was hit in New Ulm Tuesday, the third in the past 45 days.

Police received a report about a motor vehicle-pedestrian crash at 1st North and Garden Streets at 7:28 a.m. Tuesday. Paulette Schmeling, 65, of New Ulm, was in a crosswalk, walking west across North Garden Street when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Joseph Lamecker, 73, New Ulm. Schmeling was transported via helicopter to Hennepin County Medical Center with severe injuries. Lamecker was not injured. Speed, alcohol and cell phone use were not crash factors.

Police were assisted by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Allina Ambulance. The crash was the third vehicle-pedestrian crash in New Ulm in the past 45 days. Police remind all drivers to be observant of their surroundings as they travel.
