NU Police list stolen items; reward offered

NEW ULM — New Ulm Police released a list of items stolen from the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church Sept. 13 that were recovered Saturday morning by a resident in the alley on the 200 block between South Broadway and Minnesota Street.

The items and their values found in two trash bags next to the house included a gold-plated chalice, $1,000; a gold-plated crucifix, $960; silver and gold-plated chalice, $4,000; gold-plated disk that covers the chalice, $500; green chasuble (outermost liturgical vestment worn by clergy for celebration of the Eucharist) $960; and purple robe, $500; and baby Jesus statue, $50. Total value of the stolen and recovered items is $7,970.

Police were called to the residence at 8:06 a.m. Saturday after a homeowner reported finding the trash bags and what was believed to be stolen church items on his property. Recovered items were sampled for DNA by police who also canvassed the neighborhood.

Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church video from outside the church last Thursday showed a white male and female in their late teens or early 20s entering the church foyer from the alley. Physical, digital and DNA evidence is being analyzed, according to a police news release.

The investigation remains active. Police are offering $500 for information leading to the conviction of the suspects. All information can remain confidential. Call New Ulm Police at 507-233-6750 or Senior Investigator Jeff Hohensee at 507-276-5210.
