Pokémon Go event will raise funds for Relay for Life

NEW ULM — Pokémon Go players have a chance to raise money for a good cause Sunday, July 8.

Local Pokémon enthusiasts will be in German Park from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for the latest community day event, but they will also be working with Hy-Vee to raise money for Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life movement raises money for The American Cancer Society. They put donations to fund groundbreaking research in every type of cancer and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers.

During the community event, Hy-Vee will be sponsoring an area to accept donations for Relay for Life, but will also donate special Pokémon lures for the community as well as special commemorative pins for the event. Hy-Vee will also be sponsoring an area to accept donations for Relay for Life.

Local Pokémon player Doug Jones said he was personally challenging himself to donate a dollar to Relay for Life for every special Pokémon he catches on Sunday.

“Pokémon players like having a goal,” Jones said. Other players have already set their own goal to help raise funds. Some players are working within their Pokémon teams to raise most funds.

“Everyone wins when we are doing it for Relay for Life,” Jones said.

One person’s contribution will only go so far, but together players can tackle even the most legendary opponents. Jones challenged all players help a worthy cause and join the fun.

This month’s community day celebration involves the Pokémon Squirtle. Squirtle will be out in greater numbers and German Park is the perfect place to catch him.

At 4:05 p.m. after the event concludes players are invited to stay for photos with Squirtle, a group photo, and to hand out prizes.
