Highway 14 construction in Sleepy Eye starts May 21

MANKATO — Construction on Highway 14 (Main Street) through Sleepy Eye will begin on Monday, May 21. The project will be done under traffic, with the exception of a one-week closure of Main Street East at 12th Avenue for city utility work towards the end of the project. A detour will be put in place at that time.

This resurfacing project will provide smoother pavement, improved shoulders, improved curb and gutter for optimal drainage, left and right turn lanes to provide a safer corridor, and improved pedestrian safety. The project is anticipated to take three months to complete.

While work is being done on both the road and sidewalks, businesses on Main Street will remain open. A temporary pedestrian access to businesses will be provided during all phases of the project during construction.

Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye was awarded the project with a bid of $3.4 million.

The Highway 14 project through the town of Sleepy Eye is one of three construction projects in the Sleepy Eye area for 2018. Work began on May 7 for a road resurfacing project on Highway 14 from Sleepy Eye to New Ulm. Motorists are experiencing lane restrictions, but no detour for the project.

Work on Highway 4 north of Sleepy Eye is anticipated to start June 4 with a detour. This project includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 4 and County Road 29.
