Former New Ulm woman dies in Washington traffic accident

POULSBO, Wash. — A former New Ulm woman, 69-year-old Pamela A. (Cordes) Romberg of Poulsbo, Wash., died Friday at Harborview Medical Center in Poulsbo from injuries she received earlier in the day when she was struck by a car while in a crosswalk on Front Street and Torval Canyon Road.

Pamela A. Romberg, formerly of New Ulm, died at 6:43 p.m. Dec. 15, Washington State Patrol reported. She is the sister of Kathleen Backer of New Ulm.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the accident, which happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday. According to news reports, Romberg was walking across Front Street and was three-quarters of the way across the street when she was struck by a sedan traveling in the southbound lane, Poulsbo Police Chief Dan Schoonmaker said.

The driver of the vehicle was the car’s sole occupant, Deputy Chief Andy Pate said. It was the time of morning when “it’s just becoming light,” Schoonmaker said, indicating that visibility may have been a factor. The incident appeared, he said, to be “an accident in the truest sense of the word.”
