Local artists’ work will be on display at 9th annual ArtScape
NEW ULM — The Ninth Annual ArtScape opens Friday with a variety of locally-made art on display.
An opening reception starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in the 4 Pillars art gallery at The Grand Center for Arts and Culture. First through third places in both the adult and young artists categories will be announced Friday night.
“I do not think there was any kind of over-arching theme I was looking for with the selections I made, I was just looking for quality,” Juror Brian Frink said. “Work that had a certain level of quality that had to do with craft, that had to do with the presentation of the work.”
This year’s show contains a wide variety of art, Executive Director Anne Makepeace said. There are 41 pieces on display out of over 80 submissions. Nine pieces are part of the young artist category.
Art ranges from more traditional paintings to three-dimensional. One painting that impressed Frink with its ambition is “Digital Devolution” by Nicholas Schleif, which shows the face of Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg in binary code painted with dots, he said.
“Sometimes it is the level of ambition that the artist displays,” Frink said. “Other times it is a level of craft that is there.”
There is a people’s choice award for the most popular piece of art as well. Voting for it will go until the show closes Dec. 15. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge to enter.
“I just think it is worth celebrating,” Frink said. “Going and celebrating that creative activity because it enhances everybody’s life.”
