A German immigrant and architect, Berndt designed the 102-foot tall Hermann Monument that was dedicated Sept. 25, 1897 in New Ulm. The sculpture of Julius Berndt was bequeathed by his granddaughter, the late Ruth Berndt of New Ulm, a World War II nurse who later worked as a charge nurse in New Ulm.
