NU man in critical condition at HCMC

HARKIN STORE — A 53-year-old New Ulm man involved in a motorcycle-sport utility vehicle crash near the Harkin Store Sunday afternoon was listed in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) Monday.

Robert Eckstrand of New Ulm was eastbound on Nicollet County Road 21 on a 2009 Harley-Davidson when a 2016 Toyota RAV 4, driven by Ashley Sadler, 21, Mankato, turned in front of him, causing a head-on crash, according to a Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Eckstrand was not wearing a helmet, was ejected and landed in a ravine. Witnesses stopped and rendered aid. Eckstrand, who was riding alone on the motorcycle, was transported to New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) where he was flown to HCMC via North Memorial Air Ambulance. He suffered serious injuries, according to the press release.

Sadler was transported to NUMC for observation. A passenger, Austin Sadler, 21, Mankato, was not injured. Both people wore seat belts. Both vehicles were severely damaged.

The Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office reminded everyone to look twice and pay attention to motorcycles.
