Alleged sexual assault accomplices face charges

NEW ULM – A 44-year-old Sleepy Eye man and a 28-year-old Springfield man who allegedly participated in a March 26 sexual assault in Sleepy Eye were charged Wednesday in Brown County District Court.

Ruben G. Astorga, 400 Water St. S.W., Sleepy Eye; and John A. Fields, were each charged with felony first and second-degree criminal sexual conduct in a complaint filed Wednesday. The charges allege that the men used force or coercion to cause the victim to submit.

Charges stem from a complaint filed Tuesday in which Roger L. Martinez, 33, 237 1/2 Main St. West, Sleepy Eye, was charged with felony first and second-degree criminal sexual conduct, felony threats of violence, and two counts of aggravated first-degree tampering with a witness and tampering with a witness-prevent inform police.

The victim said that during the assault, two people held her down while Martinez sexually assaulted her. The assault lasted 15 minutes. The victim told authorities that she told Martinez to stop six times, and he threatened to “find her” and “kill her” if she told anyone about the assault, according to court documents.

Martinez’ bail was set at $150,000 without conditions and $75,000 with conditions Wednesday in Brown County District Court. Martinez bailed out of jail Wednesday.

Astorga and Fields were listed on the Brown County Jail roster Thursday. The two men appeared at bail hearings Thursday and bail studies were ordered.
