Hamas says it killed 12 Israeli-backed fighters

CAIRO (AP) — Gaza’s Hamas-run police force said it killed 12 members of an Israeli-backed militia after detaining them early Thursday. Hours earlier, an Israeli- and U.S.-supported aid group said Hamas attacked a bus carrying its Palestinian workers, killing at least five of them. The militia said its fighters had attacked Hamas and killed five militants. It also accused Hamas of detaining and killing humanitarian workers. It was not immediately possible to verify the competing claims or confirm the identity of those killed. The Israeli military circulated the aid group’s statement on social media but did not provide its own account of what happened.

Russia’s military casualties top 1 million in 3-year-old war, Ukraine says

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine says Russia’s military losses have topped 1 million, noting the huge price Moscow has paid for its 3-year-old invasion. The claim by the General Staff of the Ukrainian armed forces is in line with Western intelligence estimates. The U.K. Defense Ministry said in a statement on X that Russian troops have suffered more than 1 million casualties, including roughly 250,000 killed since the start of the war. Russia last reported its military casualties early in the war when it acknowledged about 6,000 soldiers had been killed. Earlier this year, the Russian General Staff claimed Ukrainian military losses had topped 1 million. The mutual claims of the other side’s losses couldn’t be independently verified.

Iran announces a new nuclear enrichment site after UN watchdog censure

VIENNA (AP) — Iran says it has built and will activate a third nuclear enrichment facility, ratcheting up tensions with the U.N. immediately after its atomic watchdog censured Iran for failing to comply with obligations meant to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon. The U.N. watchdog’s censure on Thursday, its first in 20 years over Iranian non-compliance, could set in motion an effort to restore sanctions on Iran. President Donald Trump had previously warned that Israel or America could launch airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiators failed to reach a deal on Iran’s nuclear program. He said Thursday he is concerned a “massive conflict” could occur if it does not. A sixth round of Iran-U.S. talks is scheduled to begin Sunday in Oman.
