Court Proceedings

Brown County District Court

• Felony second-degree assault-dangerous weapon and four fifth-degree assault charges were filed March 17 against a 30-year-old Sleepy Eye man accused of hitting four people with a baseball bat March 15.

Bail for Hector D. Martinez, 417 1/2 Main St. W., Sleepy Eye, was set at $10,000 without conditions, no bail with conditions Thursday. An initial court appearance was set for 9:30 a.m., March 26. He remains in Brown County Jail custody.

According to court documents, Sleepy Eye Police were dispatched to an assault report at 405 Main St. W. at 11:35 p.m. Officer Michael Gordon met Martinez holding a bat at the residence.

Martinez told police he was “jumped by all of them,” pointing at four neighbors standing in the front yard of 405 Main St. W.

The first alleged victim said they were sitting in a truck parked on the street when Martinez came over and shined a light in the window, staring at them for about 10 minutes. The first alleged victim said the four neighbors got out of the truck and Martinez came over and tried to fight all of them and said “you guys want to get it” and Martinez ran home, got a bat and hit him with it.

The alleged first victim showed police red marks several inches long and a whiter mark in the middle of his right forearm. The mark was fresh, raised in the center.

The alleged second victim said they had multiple issues with Martinez in the past, that he yelled at them, threatened them, and damaged their property.

The alleged fourth victim said Martinez grabbed him by the shirt, ripping it, before the third alleged victim grabbed Martinez by the shirt to keep him front punching him, before Martinez, now in Brown County Jail custody, ran back home.

• Felony fifth-degree drug possession-not small amount of marijuana, misdemeanor drug possession more than 1.4 grams marijuana in motor vehicle and petty misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia charges were filed March 18 against Bradley G. Johnson, 30, 407 E. 2nd St., Redwood Falls.

Bail was set at $10,000 without conditions, no bail with conditions Thursday. Johnson was in Brown County Jail custody Thursday. A court date was set for 9:30 a.m. March 26.

At 9:45 a.m. March 16, Sleepy Eye Police Officer Meyer noticed a green Toyota Camry registered to Michelle Roethler, who had an active arrest warrant, and stopped the vehicle. She knocked on the window, a man rolled it down and Meyer smelled unburnt marijuana.

The male and a woman in the car became argumentative before Meyer noticed a waterproof container often used to transport, hold, and conceal paraphernalia and controlled substances including marijuana and methamphetamine, to be consumed.

More Sleepy Eye Police arrived to assist and were informed by dispatch that the vehicle driver was Johnson.

Seized items included a blue backpack, a purple marijuana grinder, a small vile that field tested positive for 5.6 grams of meth, a small cutter, 18.1 grams of marijuana and a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for meth that weighed 1.9 gram, among other items.
