Museum Gala features visitors from the past

NEW ULM — As the Brown County Historical Society sponsors its Second Annual Night at the (bchs) Museum, it will again welcome guests from throughout Brown County’s past.

Event attendees on Sept. 16 will be met at the door of the museum by Governor and Mrs. John Lind (Dan and Trudy Beranek), along with Mayor Fritsche’s wife (Lisa Besemer). Some of the other ghostly guests helping serve appetizers reminiscent of businesses in the county’s past are Hanska’s Ole Synsteby (Arnie Smesmo), Siegel Creamery’s Anton Hillesheim (Bob Domeier); Springfield banker Mary Baasen Wooldrik (Donna Wing); New Ulm’s Ida Stork Ozias (Brenda Nielsen); Hanska’s Marit Toftelie (Jamie Windhorn); New Ulm’s Rosa Penning Schnobrich (Kathleen Backer); Ed Lambrecht from Essig’s “Ed’s Place” (Curt Lambrecht and his wife, Esther Lambrecht of the Essig Store (Donna Lambrecht); Bashaw Township’s Joseph Pascher (Loren Wing) and New Ulm’s Carrie Eibner, both Carolyn Marti Smith and Sue Marti.

The festivities start with a 5:30 p.m. social hour using all three floors of the museum, as well as the annex. The latter will be converted into a movie theater, featuring photos of some of the county’s former movie theaters and silent movies, replete with the popcorn wagon and popcorn for attendees. Setting the ambiance musically will be members of the Sleepy Eye Concertina Club outside and Grace Hennig on keyboard inside. At the conclusion of the social hour, the musicians will lead guests to Lola’s where a menu featuring a choice of three entrees will be served. The event includes a silent auction with only a few select items: slate tiles from the museum’s original roof converted into artistic works and two Hauenstein wooden beer crates; a wine pull; and a bucket raffle.

Funds raised will be designated for local matching dollars toward a future grant needed for museum tuck-pointing. Reservations are $75 per person and can be made at the museum at 2 N. Broadway, New Ulm, MN 56073 or call 507-233-2616 with questions.
