Off the Shelf: Read all about it!

New Ulm Public Library has many fascinating and informative nonfiction books. Today I came across some on our new shelf that are especially timely. Keep reading and I’ll tell you about a few of them.

This late summer season, the United States is once again experiencing the all too common disasters of wildfires and hurricanes. New Ulm Library has two new books that address these types of disasters. We all remember the devastating Camp Fire that destroyed Paradise, CA in November of 2018. “Fire in Paradise: An American Tragedy” (363.34 Gee) documents the deadly fire that burned Paradise to the ground in a matter of hours.

Most recently, Hurricane Laura made landfall at Lake Charles, LA as a category 4 hurricane and caused tremendous destruction in that area of the country. If hurricanes fascinate you, stop in and pick up “A Furious Sky: The Five Hundred-Year History of America’s Hurricanes” (363.3492 Dolin). According to Bryan Norcross, a meteorologist and hurricane specialist from Miami, “Dolin brings America’s great hurricanes alive with rich stories about the storms and the people whose lives they changed forever…This is a hurricane book for everyone.”

Minnesota Twins fans will want to check out a couple new baseball books we recently received. If you watch the Twins broadcasts on Fox Sports North, you know it’s time for baseball when you hear Dick Bremer’s unique voice. Dick has written “Dick Bremer: Game Used: My Life in Stitches with the Minnesota Twins” (921 Bremer), a memoir filled with stories about his love of baseball and the Minnesota Twins.

Also not to be missed for Twins fans is “One Tough Out: Fighting Off Life’s Curveballs” by Rod Carew (921 Carew). Rod takes you through the twists and turns of his life, dodging curveballs every step of the way.

So, whether you are digging deeper into disaster, or dodging baseballs, stop at the library and read all about it! Remember, we have contactless pickup available for those that prefer not to come into the library. Give us a call to set up a time, and grab your books off the cart just outside the door.
