Don’t let the cold weather get you down! Put on your warmest clothes and venture down to the library for these great upcoming events.

Pre-teens and teens in fifth through eighth grades are invited to join us for Black Light Bingo on Friday, Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. We’ll play Bingo in black lighting; wear white clothes so we can see you in the dark! Pizza will be served and prizes are up for grabs, so don’t skip out on this great event. Registration is required; call 507-359-8331 and reserve your spot today.

DNR Naturalist Scott Kudelka will present “Spiders: Friend or Foe?” on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Many people find spiders scary or creepy. Usually because of spiders’ eight legs, big eyes and how easily they have adapted to being in your house. Spiders play an important role in the environment – mainly to prevent the world from becoming overcrowded with insects. There are many different types of spiders and surprisingly not all make webs to catch their prey. Kudelka will talk about some of the different spiders found in Minnesota and their amazing characteristics. This free program is geared toward adults, but all ages are welcome.

Join our self-directed open Needlework Group on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Needleworkers of all varieties (quilting, embroidery, crochet, knitting, etc.), levels and abilities are welcome to join this age 16 and older group. Each needleworker should bring his/her own materials and ideas. People are welcome to come and go as they see fit. You may have seen the group’s handiwork on display at the library this fall; thanks to our needleworkers for sharing their art!

The self-directed Art Group will meet again starting on Jan. 15. The group meets each Wednesday from 2-5:30 p.m. Artists of all levels and abilities are welcome to join this adults-only group. Each artist should bring his/her own materials and ideas. All materials must be non-odorous. People are welcome to come and go as they see fit.

New Ulm Public Library, in partnership with New Ulm Community Education and Community and Seniors Together Learning (CASTLE), is hosting a screening of the PBS documentary “American Creed” on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 1:30 p.m. In the documentary film “American Creed” former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy come together from different points of view to investigate the idea of a unifying American creed. Their spirited inquiry frames the stories of citizen-activists striving to realize their own visions of America’s promise across deepening divides.

Following the screening of the film Dr. Timothy Grundmeier, professor of History at Martin Luther College, will lead a Community Conversation about the idea of a unifying American creed and what it means to be an American today.

“American Creed” is a co-production of Citizen Film and WTTW Chicago and is made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as part of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen. American Creed Community Conversations are supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the American Library Association, Citizen Film, Facing History and Ourselves, and the National Writing Project.

We hope to see you at the library for these great programs. Don’t let the cold intimidate you!
