Off the Shelf: Cookies! Good eating and good reading, too

Since October is National Cookie Month, I cannot resist telling you about some of the “cookie” books you will find at the library. Who doesn’t love cookies? Decadent cookies, healthy cookies, crunchy or soft cookies, the possibilities are endless. Here, let me tempt you.

“Irresistible cookies, bars, shortbread, and more” is the promise of “Sally’s Cookie Addiction” by Sally McKenney (641.8654 McKenne). Just looking at the beautiful cookies on the cover sold me! I had to page through it anyway. How do Iced Carrot Cake Oatmeal Cookies complete with cream cheese icing sound? Or, if you love pumpkin spice, you might want to give Pumpkin Spice Sugar Cookies a try.

Martha Stewart has a brand new cookie book, “Martha Stewart’s Cookie Perfection:100+ Recipes to Take Your Sweet Treats to the Next Level” (641.8654 Stewart). Martha vows to take your old favorites and make them “absolutely extraordinary.” Paulina has already taken a look at this one and has compiled a list she would like to try, like Pastel Butter Cookies, Sparkly Lemon Cookies, Linzer Flower Cookies, Streusel Jammies and Biscotti. Hmmm. Maybe I could volunteer to be her official taster. Martha also shares cultural favorites from around the world such as Stroopwafels, Pizzelles, and Speculaas, which are a St. Nicholas Day tradition in Luxembourg.

I’m still hoping for a few more beautiful fall days, but you may be starting to think about the holidays coming up, so I want to include some holiday cookie books as well.

“Holiday Cookies: Showstopping Recipes to Sweeten the Season” (641.8654 Nederla) has mouthwatering recipes for classic holiday cookies as well as delicious favorites from around the world. Give a few of these recipes a try; they may become the star of your holiday gathering.

Also on our shelf is the “Great Minnesota Cookie Book” ( 641.8654 Dean), a collection of Award -Winning Recipes from the Star Tribune’s Holiday Cookie Contest. Need I say more? They are the best of the best that Minnesota bakers have to offer.

Coming Soon: “Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Friends Christmas Cookbook” and “Gooseberry Patch Christmas Cookies.” Look for these new books at the library in November.

If you are looking for cookie inspiration, stop in at the library, and we will show you where the cookie books are. You can browse as long as you want. I’m confident you will come across a recipe that will become a delicious family favorite.
