NUMC specialists see patients at Madelia Community Hospital and Clinic

Dr. Swearingen consults with an expecting mother at Madelia Clinic.

New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) has long had a history of partnership and support of other medical facilities in the region. This is especially true when it comes to sharing specialty physicians at other facilities, to make access easier for patients across southern Minnesota.

NUMC shares four of its specialty physicians with Madelia Community Hospital and Clinic (MCHC) on a scheduled, monthly basis: orthopedics, general surgery, podiatry, and OB/GYN.

General Surgeon Karl Papierniak, MD, has been seeing patients at MCHC for years. He currently sees patients in the clinic every Tuesday for regular office appointments, and performs minor procedures, endoscopies, and surgeries in the hospital.

Orthopedic Surgeon Angela Honstad, MD, began seeing patients at MCHC shortly after she began her practice at NUMC about two years ago. Dr. Honstad sees patients in Madelia every Friday morning for office visits and minor procedures.

Podiatrist Steven Wachter, DPM, has been seeing patients at MCHC for several years. His current schedule in Madelia is one Tuesday morning each month, seeing patients for office visits and minor procedures.

New to the MCHC lineup is OB/GYN Ashleigh Swearingen, MD. Dr. Swearingen began seeing patients at NUMC in September 2019 and has since expanded her practice to seeing patients in Madelia every other Monday afternoon. It’s a perfect fit, she says, because of the demographic in the region.

“I have a passion for working with women in Hispanic populations as I worked with many of them while I was in residency in Chicago,” Swearingen said.

At this time, Swearingen provides OB visits and consultation in Madelia. The plan is to be able to offer minor procedures at that location, also.
