New Ulm Medical Center welcomes Robin Harmer, CNP, cardiology specialist

Robin Harmer, CNP

Certified Nurse Practitioner Robin Harmer, who began seeing patients at New Ulm Medical Center in May, never considered a career outside of nursing.

“It seemed to be my calling,” Robin said. “I started working as an RN in 1980, and after working in managerial roles for a while, decided I prefer clinical, direct patient care, so I returned to school to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and further my career in that direction.”

Robin earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Roberts Wesleyon College in Rochester, NY. She completed her master’s in nursing/Nurse Practitioner Degree through Duke University. Her residency training in North Carolina and Virginia was completed in 2000. Robin sees cardiology patients at NUMC as a practitioner through Minneapolis Heart Institute.

Robin has a particular interest in Coronary Artery Disease and Congestive Heart Failure.

“There is something very gratifying about participating in improving a person’s quality of life,” she said. “I find cardiology and the study of the heart to be fascinating.”

She sees her approach to her clinical practice as a collaboration with her patients.

“I like for my patients to participate in the decisions about their care and I place a lot of emphasis on teaching the patients about their medical problems and therapies, so that they can participate in those decisions,” Robin said.

Robin and her husband of 41 years, Tom, moved to New Ulm from Clarksville, VA. Tom is a retired high school English teacher. Their son, Walter, and grandson, Mark (16) live in Virginia. Their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren live in New Ulm: Christie Ann, Bryce, Jonas (3 ½ years), and Silas (19 months) Simon. Together, Robin and her family enjoy singing and playing instruments, playing board games, gathering for meals, and playing outdoors.

In her spare time, Robin enjoys gardening, music, bible study, and stamp collecting.
