Minnesota crushes Canisius 10-1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Reggie Meyer allowed just one run in eight innings and top-seeded Minnesota cruised past Canisius 10-1 on Friday night to open its NCAA Tournament play.
Terrin Vavra had three hits and three RBI for the Golden Gophers (42-13), who will host UCLA on Saturday. The Bruins rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to stun Gonzaga 6-5 in their opener.
Minnesota scored five times in the second inning to build a cushion against the Golden Griffins (35-21) and added runs in next three innings in a dominant performance for the Big Ten’s best team.
Christ Conley had an RBI for Canisius (35-21), which faces Gonzaga in an elimination game on Saturday.
J.P. Stevenson (10-2) took the loss for Canisius, and Meyer improved to 8-3.
TROY 6, DUKE 0
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Joey Denison drove in four runs to help Troy upset Duke 6-0 on Friday night in the Athens Regional.
Brody Binder and Rigsby Mosley each drove in runs to help the third-seeded Trojans (42-19) earn a rain-delayed victory. Troy will face the Campbell-Georgia winner on Saturday night after Duke (40-16) faces the loser of the other opening-round game in an elimination matchup.
The game was delayed for 5 hours, 25 minutes due to lightning and rain that led officials to postpone the Campbell-Georgia game until Saturday.
Denison hit a three-run double in the first and added an RBI single in the fourth to put Troy in control. Binder added an RBI double in the first and Mosley’s groundout in the sixth gave the Trojans a six-run lead.
Ryan Day (5-4) gave up four runs in 2 2/3 innings for Duke.
HOUSTON 9, PURDUE 1
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Lael Lockhart Jr. homered, Joe Davis drove in two runs and Houston beat Purdue 9-1 on Friday night in the NCAA Tournament.
Lockhart’s three-run homer in the ninth helped the third-seeded Cougars (37-23) advance to face North Carolina, the tournament’s No. 6 overall seed, on Saturday night after the second-seeded Boilermakers (37-20) face North Carolina A&T in an elimination game.
Houston scored the game’s final nine runs, all in the final five innings, and had 15 hits. Tyler Bielamowicz gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead with his run-scoring sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Davis hit two-run double an inning later.
Aaron Fletcher (7-3) went the distance, allowing four hits and no earned runs. Tanner Andrews (7-5) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings for Purdue.
Harry Shipley drove in Purdue’s run with an infield hit in the third.
ARMY 5, NC STATE 1
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Rob Regine hit an RBI double, Tyler Giovinco pitched into the seventh inning and Army upset North Carolina State 5-1 on Friday night.
Anthony Giachin had a run-scoring single to help the fourth-seeded Black Knights (37-22) earn just the fourth NCAA Tournament victory in program history. Army will play second-seeded Auburn (40-21) on Saturday night after the Wolfpack (40-17) face Northeastern (36-20) in an elimination game.
The Black Knights never trailed and built a 5-0 lead on Giachin’s RBI single in the seventh. That came after Army scored twice in the sixth, with Regine’s double scoring Giachin and Drake Titus following with a run-scoring sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Giovinco (9-5) allowed six singles and only one extra-base hit.
Evan Edwards had three hits and drove in N.C. State’s run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
