SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye extended its season on Thursday as the Indians crushed Renville County West 56-28 in a Section 2A, North Subsection tournament girls’ basketball game. Sleepy Eye is the No. 7 seed with an 11-15 overall record.

The win sets up a third meeting against cross-town rival (and No. 2 seed) St. Mary’s (18-7) on Tuesday. The teams split during the regular season with each team earning a win on its home floor.

Sleepy Eye used a full-court press, double-teaming RCW’s players as often as it could for most of the contest. The result disrupted the Jaguar offensive rhythm, which translated into Sleepy Eye points.

“We got points off turnovers, and we did exactly what we needed to,” Sleepy Eye head coach Ryan Hulke said.

Brittney Dittbenner led all scorers with 20 points, seven rebounds and nine steals. Madi Krueger added 14 points, six steals and five assists. Brooklyn Moldan had 8 points, five steals and four assists.

Krueger started a run early in the second half with a basket. Dittbenner scored on a reverse layup and a 3-point shot the next time down the floor. As the game was winding down, Leslie Flores added a basket and Dittbenner canned two more 3-pointers.

Kadence Hesse scored for a 54-22 Sleepy Eye advantage. Alyssa Romberg’s basket led to the final points for Sleepy Eye.

Addyson Tanner drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final tally.

Dittbenner’s 3-pointer were the first points for Sleepy Eye. Krueger’s basket made it 5-0. Holly Bratsch’s 3-pointer brought the Jaguars to as close as they would be for the remainder of the game at 5-3.

The Indians wasted no time by coming out strong at the start of the game. They put together a 15-0 run and jumped out to a 20-3 lead.

Dittbenner and Krueger hit 3-point shots for a 29-9 Indian lead. Pamela Winzenburg’s basket made it 29-11 Sleepy Eye at halftime.

Lauren Wulf led RCW with 8 points.
